MANY is traveling all across the country, meeting with member organizations, talking about their programs, and identifying trends and issues that are happening in the youth services field across the U.S. We had the privilege of sitting down with a staffer from our member organization, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mississippi to talk about mentoring in Mississippi. Their Program Specialist, Sharon Gill, had this to say about what keeps her energized in her role:
“My energy is fueled by working and getting to know these families, particularly the children. Once you sit down and talk with them about why they would like to have a Big Brother or Big Sister, it seems as though you can’t rest until you can make their request a reality. There are days that seem as long as the Nile River, but after you remember the conversation and the look in those dark watery eyes, you know that you have to keep pushing. And that river becomes a stream running quietly through the trees.”
“Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mississippi is based in Jackson, Mississippi. Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States. They have been one of the leaders in one-to-one youth service for more than a century, developing positive relationships that have a direct and lasting impact on the lives of young people. Big Brothers Big Sisters serves children, ages 5 through 15, in communities across the country.”
